Privacy Policy for TerryVoiceRead Chrome Extension

Last Updated: 2023-10-26

Thank you for using TerryVoiceRead (“the Extension”). This policy is intended to help you understand what data the Extension handles and why.

1. No Personal Data Collection

TerryVoiceRead is designed to respect your privacy. The Extension does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personally identifiable information (PII). All processing of text and user data occurs locally on your computer within your browser.

2. Data Storage

All data required for the Extension to function, including your playlist, settings, and RSS feed list, is stored locally on your computer using the chrome.storage.local API. This data is never transmitted to any external server and is not synced across your devices. It remains entirely under your control within your browser’s local storage. You can clear this data at any time through the browser’s extension management page or via the “Clear Playlist” and “Import/Export” features in the settings.

3. Third-Party Libraries & Services

The Extension uses the following third-party libraries locally for its core functionality. These libraries do not transmit any data.

  • Mozilla Readability.js: Used to extract article content from web pages. This process happens entirely within your browser.
  • PDF.js: Used to extract text from local PDF files you select. This process also happens entirely within your browser.

The Extension interacts with the following external services only at your explicit request:

  • RSS Feeds: When you add an RSS feed, the Extension fetches the feed’s data directly from the URL you provide. To circumvent technical restrictions (CORS policy), these requests may be routed through a proxy server. The default proxy does not log or store any data from these requests. The Extension also provides an option for you to use your own proxy server. Your list of subscribed RSS feeds is stored only locally.

4. Permissions Explanation

The Extension requests a minimal set of permissions to provide its features:

  • storage: Required to save your settings and playlist locally on your device.
  • scripting: Required to inject the content extraction script (Readability.js) into web pages so you can add them to your playlist.
  • contextMenus: Required to provide the right-click menu options (“Add page content to playlist” and “Read selected text”).
  • activeTab: Required to get the URL and title of the current tab when adding a page to the playlist.

5. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
