Gravatars are globally recognized avatars, (an avatar being a small picture used to
represent a user when making comments or posts), and are very popular among
blogs and forums, with many blogs and popular forum systems supporting
gravatars. They enable users to use the same avatar across all socially-oriented
sites they use, should they wish to.
What is a Gravatar?
“A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an 80×80 pixel avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?”
User roles can easily be assigned or denied permission to use Gravatars
